Urgent appeal to end financing fossil fuel companies
Dear ANZ, I am writing to you today to convey my deep concerns about the climate crisis and to urge ANZ to cease funding coal, oil and gas expansion. As you are undoubtedly aware, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has unequivocally stated that limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels is crucial to avoiding catastrophic consequences. Achieving this goal necessitates no new coal, oil or gas production and an immediate and substantial reduction in our reliance on fossil fuels. Banks are critical to this change. While I recognise that ANZ has made a commitment to net zero emissions, I was very disappointed to note that ANZ performed the worst in the Australian Conservation Foundation’s “Laggards to Leaders” report. You can find the full research and recommendations here: https://www.acf.org.au/assessment-of-banks-climate-commitments By continuing to finance fossil fuel companies, your bank inadvertently contributes to the perpetuation of a carbon-intensive economy that undermines our collective efforts to combat climate damage. This not only poses significant risks for future generations but also jeopardises the stability and prosperity of communities worldwide. I ask of you, as an influential institution with the power to shape our future, to reconsider your current financing practices. Embracing sustainable investments in renewable energy sources, energy efficiency initiatives, and other low-carbon technologies is not only ethically imperative but also financially prudent in the long run. By adopting such measures, your bank will contribute significantly towards the global effort to limit warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius and safeguard the future of our planet. I kindly request that you share this email with senior management and decision-makers.
