I'm writing to strongly urge you to not approve Woodside’s Browse and North West Shelf extension approvals under the EPBC Act.

Both proposals would present significant threats to our environment and climate, and extending the North West Shelf would have impacts on First Nations cultural heritage.

The Browse gas field is in one of the richest marine environments in the world that many species of whales, turtles and pods of dolphins call home. Woodside’s project would drill 54 gas wells into and around the ecologically significant Scott Reef and construct a 900-km-long underwater pipeline to send the gas onshore, destroying marine habitat. Woodside assesses that any gas and condensate spill from a well blowout, vessel rupture or ship collision at its Browse operation would directly risk 39 threatened animals. The risk to nature is too high. Extracting gas at Browse will also create more greenhouse gas emissions leading to climate harm to nature in WA and beyond: including Scott Reef and marine life in WA, Ningaloo Reef, the Great Barrier Reef and the old-growth forests that support threatened species like Greater gliders, Swift parrots and Quolls.

Woodside’s proposal to extend the North West Shelf gas processing plant until 2070 will lock Australia into burning climate-wrecking gas into the atmosphere for decades to come, bringing climate harm like extreme bushfires and floods to nature Australia-wide. The plant is located near an estimated over one million examples of Murujuga rock carvings dating back at least fifty thousand years, including the first recorded image of a human face.  The impacts of LNG processing on this rock art have led to a Senate Inquiry and drawn concern from Murujuga Traditional Owners and rock art experts around the world. Allowing the plant to continue to 2070 could have irreparable consequences for First Nations cultural heritage and the climate. It is completely unprecedented for the government to approve an extension with no restrictions on where the gas will come from - including potentially nature-destroying fracking in the Kimberley.

Furthermore, both Browse and the North West Shelf extension are components of Woodside’s Burrup Hub development, which is the most polluting new coal, gas or oil proposal in the Southern Hemisphere. The Burrup Hub would bring significant climate harm to oceans and bushland Australia-wide. Approving either Browse or the North West Shelf would get Woodside one step closer to building its Burrup Hub and releasing new greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to more than 13 times Australia’s current emissions.

Minister, please put the environment, our climate, cultural heritage and people first and reject Woodside’s Browse and North West Shelf extension proposals.
