To the Prime Minister and the Opposition Leader, A new YouGov poll (https://togetherwecanmovement.org.au/), the largest in Australia's history has found the majority of people in all 151 federal electorates believe the federal government should be doing more to tackle climate change and that our future is renewable. It also found: - One-in-four voters (28%) rate climate change as the most important issue to determine their vote at the next federal election, while another 39% rated it as important, making climate important to 67% of voters. - One-in-three (29%) voters in inner metro electorates and one-in-four (26%) voters in rural electorates say climate change is the most important issue for them at the next election. - Six out of ten voters (61%) support action to cut Australia’s greenhouse emissions by at least half by 2030. - Nationally, 71% of voters do not see coal and gas as part of Australia’s future energy mix, with a majority in every seat rejecting plans for the government to build new gas and coal-fired power plants. - 67% of voters think the Morrison government should pay more attention to expert advice on climate change. - A majority in the Hunter Valley coal region of NSW and in the Queensland ‘coal seats’ of Flynn, Maranoa, Capricornia, Kennedy and Dawson do not believe that new coal and gas plants should be built to supply Australia’s future energy needs. The poll makes clear that Australians want the federal government to do more, and that means committing to a climate plan that builds clean industries and jobs for Australians and cuts climate pollution this decade. We can Renew Australia with Climate solutions that are here now and ready to scale. Let’s: - Send our sunshine around the world. Australia can become a global clean energy superpower in the next decade by replacing coal, gas and uranium exports and use with renewable energy. We have plentiful sun and wind. A valuable export industry that secures and creates great jobs through manufactured products like green hydrogen, steel and aluminium is within our reach. - Create energy independent communities. Power schools, hospitals, government offices, public and social housing, remote Indigenous communities, sporting clubs, halls and libraries with affordable, clean energy by 2025, and replace coal and gas-burning power stations with renewable energy and storage by 2030. - Travel clean. Take pollution out of transport. Save our health and climate with more accessible buses and trains running on clean energy, make electric vehicles cheaper and install electric vehicle charging stations across the country. - Save our big backyard. Create strong national nature protection laws that stop Australia’s worsening extinction crisis, and support nature as a climate solution. New laws must be enforced by an independent regulator. Our forests, wetlands and bushlands store greenhouse gases, provide homes for our unique animals and birds, and are places where people restore and revive. - Move the money. Political parties must stop accepting dirty donations and giving public funding to coal and gas companies and ban big political donations to reduce their influence on decision making. Taking climate action is good for Australia. Please take the climate action that Australians want and need.
