We're counting on you to call this project in
To the Deputy Premier, Minister for State Development, Infrastructure, Local Government and Planning and Minister Assisting the Premier on Olympics Infrastructure Dear Minister Miles, You have an unmissable opportunity to stop the construction of Waratah Coal’s power station in Barcaldine. As a Queenslander, I’m writing to ask you to please call this project in on the grounds that the power station is against state interests. Burning coal and gas is driving climate change; a new coal-fired power station would lock Central Queensland into decades of burning coal. COP26 showed that the world is ready to consign fossil fuels to history. We don’t want to be left behind. Indeed, during the last 3 elections the people of Queensland have voted for a party promising a 50% renewable energy target by 2030. It’s clear that new coal-fuelled power stations don’t have a place in the future that we want. Increased state greenhouse gas emissions exacerbate dangerous climate change impacts, both on present and future generations. Whether we look at the loss of biodiversity or the risks to human health, nobody but the private sector wins with the construction of Waratah Coal’s power station. Queensland deserves a future economy that benefits everyday people, not a billionaire like Clive Palmer. Let’s give the sunshine state a chance to become a clean energy superpower by building big, publicly-owned clean energy projects which can benefit everyone and be held to higher standards to protect the environment, people’s health, and Indigenous cultural sites. A recent report demonstrates that by acting on climate change we can create many more jobs than by sticking to fossil fuels. The report shows how we could create 77,800 jobs in the clean energy sector in Queensland by acting now, significantly more than the number of people in coal industry jobs – an industry that is being phased out in any case. The full report can be found here: https://www.acf.org.au/clean-exports-could-deliver-395000-new-jobs By all estimations, we need a change. Call in Waratah Coal’s project to represent and protect the people of Queensland as well as our beautiful places and wildlife. We’re counting on you, minister.
