I can’t believe that the Maugean skate survived the extinction of the dinosaurs 66 million years ago, but it may not survive the Albanese Labor Government.

As your constituent, I am horrified to hear that the government will rush through amendments to Australia’s national environment laws to protect industries that wreck nature.

This decision is an insult to those who voted for the Albanese Government and flies in the face of the government’s 2022 promise to fix Australia's national environment laws so they protect the places and creature we love.

Not only did the Prime Minister cave to the interests of the Western Australia mining industry and shelve long-promised new nature laws, but now, with a federal election on the horizon, I understand that the government has decided to weaken the very laws that are meant to protect nature in favour of industries like salmon farming that profit from its destruction. Who does this government really work for?

I have seen the media reports of mass salmon deaths, of rotting fish washing up on pristine Tasmanian beaches, and of Australians from all walks of life up in arms. We don’t want companies like Huon and Tassal polluting Macquarie Harbour to such an extent that the government’s own conservation advice for the Maugean skate calls it “catastrophic” for the endangered species. We don’t want damaging activities to be immune from review. And yet, this is exactly what the Albanese Government is permitting.

With the election around the corner, I’m urging you: 
- Don’t allow the Prime Minister to gut our already broken nature laws for special treatment of the multinational salmon industry to wreck nature and behave as it pleases 
- Commit to delivering strong new nature laws and a national EPA within 12 months of new government so that places like Macquarie Harbour and ancient species like the Maugean skate can't be willfully destroyed, and polluting industries like salmon farming are properly regulated, not let off the hook.

You need to stick to the Albanese Government’s commitment to zero new extinctions. The Maugean skate could be the world’s first fish species sent extinct by aquaculture/fish farming. This is a choice, and I am asking you to stop it.

Australia’s nature is in dire straits. The Albanese Government accepts that our national environmental laws are unfit for purpose and yet is seeking to weaken their already limited ability to protect nature even further.

Make Labor’s actions match its words.

Don’t amend Australia’s nature laws to protect the interests of corporations toxifying our remaining natural places.

As a voter in your electorate, I urge you to commit to delivering strong new nature laws and an EPA to enforce them within 12 months of a re-elected Albanese government.
