It's time for a new generation of environment laws

Our laws must protect our communities and our reefs, rivers, forests and wildlife from pollution, overuse and extinction. And they must stop climate pollution – now one of the biggest drivers of environmental destruction.

Big polluters must not get away with damaging life. Strong laws give communities a say, not just corporations with deep pockets. They stop the extinction of our wildlife and protect the places we love, rather than gutting them for short-term gain. They make sure no one can damage what sustains us or take more than their fair share.

That's why the Places You Love Alliance and APEEL have mapped out a blueprint for a new generation of environment laws.

Laws that will empower our communities, protect our reefs, rivers, forests and wildlife and ensure we have a thriving and sustainable economy that supports the whole web of life.

Welcome to your new portfolio and role as the Minister for Environment and Water!

You have the incredible opportunity to usher in a new dawn for nature protection – and with the forests, wildlife, wetlands and reefs that we depend on being destroyed at a dangerous rate, it couldn’t arrive sooner.

Communities across Australia have called loudly to better protect our living world. It connects us and sustains us, and we’re proud of the incredible places and wildlife here in Australia that are found nowhere else on Earth.

But with much-loved Australian animals like koalas and gang-gang cockatoos recently becoming ‘endangered’ in some states, and entire ecosystems like the Murray Darling River system and Great Barrier Reef collapsing, together we need to turn things around.

You can put Australia on a path for incredible change for nature in the coming months. Let’s begin protecting and restoring the nature we love, by delivering the promises the Labor Party brought to the federal election as the first steps:

1. Deliver strong nature laws that actually protect nature, stop destruction of wetlands, forests, and rivers, and restore habitat and wildlife
2. Create an Environment Protection Agency to enforce these laws
3. Lead on ambitious global goals for nature at the upcoming meeting of the UN Convention on Biological Diversity, that halt biodiversity destruction, end extinction and protect 30% of land and seas by 2030.

Because we need nature – for the water we drink, the food we eat and to pull carbon pollution from the air.

But nature needs us to harness this moment. A new government, new hope and opportunities to turn around Australia’s alarming nature destruction and end Australia’s extinction crisis.

How we use the data you enter on this form
