Dear Ambassador, I am alarmed to hear news of the Japanese government's plan to empty tanks at Fukushima containing more than 1 million tonnes of water – much of it contaminated and dangerous – into the Pacific Ocean. What happened at Fukushima ten years ago was a terrible tragedy, and I am concerned that this plan will only bring further damage to communities, land and ecosystems. Instead, I kindly implore Japan to seek safe solutions to managing this waste water, so that we continue to learn and move on from the Fukushima disaster. At the time of the tenth anniversary of the Fukushima nuclear disaster I send my sympathy to those affected by this event and respectfully request that you convey the deep concerns that I and many Australians hold over the planned direct disposal of waste to the Pacific.
