Subject:
Minister Payne, please ask Japan to reconsider ocean dump plan
To Minister for Foreign Affairs Marise Payne It is now eleven years since the massive Fukushima nuclear failure and contamination release. People, the environment and the economy have been hit hard. These impacts continue today – in Japan and far beyond. In October 2011 the Australian Safeguards and Non-Proliferation Office (ASNO) confirmed the Fukushima nuclear crisis was directly fuelled by uranium from Australia. Minister, we cannot change the past but we can act to shape the future. Right now the Tokyo Electric Power Company and the Japanese government are planning to directly release large volumes of contaminated water into the Pacific Ocean. Understandably, there are serious concerns across Japan, throughout Asia and around the Pacific region, including the Pacific Island Forum. There are uncertainties around the effectiveness of the planned treatment process and the environmental and human health and wealth impacts of increasing levels of tritium and other contaminants. And there is anger around treating our shared and living ocean as a disposal dam or a flush point. We share this view and ask that you: - convey this – and other expressions of concern and opposition from communities in Australia and across the Pacific – to the Japanese government - commit that Australia will formally urge Japan to defer advancing the planned direct ocean release and instead revisit alternative waste treatment and management options The tragedy of Fukushima and the current global nuclear uncertainty highlight the importance of scrutiny and caution around future shaping nuclear decisions. We need long-term and responsible thinking and Minister you can take a step towards this by asking Japan to take a step away from its dump plan. Please take that step.
