Speak out against the Fukushima water release
To the Hons Pat Conroy and Penny Wong, I am alarmed to hear news of the Japanese government's plan to empty tanks this year at Fukushima containing more than 1.3 million tonnes of water – much of it contaminated and dangerous – into the Pacific Ocean. The damage to communities' well-being, culture, and industries, to sea life and to ecosystems is immeasurable. That is why Pacific nations, alongside many in Korea, China and Japan itself are opposing this plan. Can you please speak up with these voices of opposition? With Australia's position in this region, we must stand with those seeking to protect the ocean from wastewater. Your government has a strong position against pursuing nuclear power within our borders. I implore you to please stand against this dangerous and polluting energy abroad as well. We know that Australian uranium was fueling the Fukushima complex at the time of the meltdowns. This disaster is also our story. The ongoing radiation and pollution that results from it, is in part Australia's responsibility. I implore you to show leadership and demand the halting of plans to directly discharge contaminated wastewater in the Pacific Ocean. The Pacific Ocean is essential to life on Earth. We cannot allow it to be turned into a radioactive sewer. With the UN Global Oceans Treaty being agreed to a week ago, allowing this water release would not give credence to the way this treaty will be implemented. Thank you for your time and your representation.
